Principal's Message

Dear Birch Lane Families,

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be coming up the week of March 12th - 16th.  All 1st through 6th grade students will be released at 1:30pm to allow parents and teachers to meet. Kindergartners will keep their usual schedule.  Before the conference, take a few minutes to ask your child if there are questions they have for the teacher.  After the conference, share the progress your student has made and also any areas that could use more effort from your child. Our goal is to work together with you to provide the support each child needs to do their best.  If your child's teacher does not schedule a conference for you, it means your child continues to make good progress.  You may still request a conference.

Davis Adult School will be offering summer enrichment classes for elementary and junior high school students this summer. Art, Spanish, computers, Science Magic and a host of other courses may be offered.  It is a fee based program and more information will be coming in the next few weeks.

Thanks for all you do to support the students of Birch Lane Elementary School.

Kathy Tyzzer

Spring Fling
We Need Your Support

Birch Lane Families,
The 2012 Birch Lane Spring Fling is fast approaching. The Spring Fling is the PTA's biggest fundraising event of the year. In order to have a successful fund drive, we need everyone's help. We are seeking any and all members of the Birch Lane community who have ties to our local business community and/or are able to help the PTA solicit donations for our annual auction. Many local businesses will be solicited in writing within the next couple weeks, but we need a small army of volunteers to make the follow up phone calls and pick up the donations.

If you want to help, in any capacity, please do not hesitate to contact your classroom representative, any member of the PTA, or me.

Thank you for your support,
Aaron Wright PTA Vice President
Love a Picture Book Month - Success!

Our Love a Picture Book Month, "Books Take You Places-Reading Road Trip" was a huge success!  We hoped to read enough books to travel coast to coast but with the help of fantastic Birch Lane readers, we not only made it to the east coast and back but took a few side trips as well.  Our school read a total of 7,280 pictures books for 7,280 miles during February!  Stop by the library to see the highway of vehicles including the detour across the ceiling.  T-shirts are still available and for sale in the library.

Family Love a Picture Book Night was a fun celebration of picture books, reading, and traveling in the US.  Thank you to teachers and staff who assisted, to our guest readers, as well as Assemblywoman Mariko Yamada who attended our event and read Duck for President to enthusiastic listeners.

The Road Trip is not quite over yet.  Our youngest students will continue to learn about the United States through picture books and Google Earth tours while some of the intermediate students research various US related topics. Our final "road trip" will be May 9th around the quad. Hopefully you can join us on our travels.

Davis Bicycles! 2012 Bike Loopalooza

Davis Bicycles! 2012 Bike Loopalooza to be held Sunday, May 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information see  www.davisbicycles.org.

In 2010, the Davis Bicycles! Schools Committee held the inaugural Bike Loopalooza on May 16. The purpose of the Loopalooza was to acquaint Davis parents and children with the Davis Bike Loop. The Bike Loop is a 12-mile loop around the perimeter of the City of Davis. Established in 2007 through the efforts of Davis Bicycles, the loop is completely paved and largely protected from motor vehicle traffic, providing a safe route to the proximity of seven of the nine elementary schools in Davis. The Schools Committee wanted to get the word out that commuting to school by bicycle along the Bike Loop is a safe and fun alternative to commuting by motor vehicle.
The inaugural Bike Loopalooza attracted 173 young cyclists and their families. These riders started the Bike Loop at one of 11 stations, mostly located near one of the seven elementary schools on the Loop, and staffed by volunteers. Each station featured activities, games or prizes. Each young participant was given a Passport when he or she began the ride and received a stamp at each station. Sixty-one of these young people completed the entire 12-mile loop, collecting all 11 stamps in their passports! Each cyclist that collected 3 stamps received a Clif Z-Bar donated by Clif Bar & Company. Several stations also distributed other prizes such as spoke cards and bike pins donated by Davis Bicycles! and the City of Davis.

2011 Bike Loopalooza
The 2011 Bike Loopalooza took place on Sunday, May 22. More than 150 children and their families came out for a day of fun and exercise. Nearly 100 elementary age students completed the entire 12-mile loop!

Davis Bicycles!
Davis Bicycles! is a citizen group dedicated to promoting bicycling in Davis and addressing issues of advocacy, safety, transportation and education. We believe that creating an inviting and safe environment for all cyclists is a great way to promote healthy living and fitness in our community.
