Principal's Message
Dear Birch Lane Families,
Our annual Explorit Family Night is coming up this Thursday, February 23rd, from 6:30-8:00 pm in the MPR. I know students and teachers have missed having Classroom Adventures this year as Explorit had to downsize due to the economy, but they are still providing evening programs and a summer school program is planned. Please bring toddlers, school aged kids, moms and dads and grandparents to this fun event, provided by your Birch Lane PTA.
Thanks for all you so to support the students of Birch Lane.

Spring Fling
We Need Your Support
Birch Lane Families,
The 2012 Birch Lane Spring Fling is fast approaching. The Spring Fling is the PTA's biggest fundraising event of the year. In order to have a successful fund drive, we need everyone's help. We are seeking any and all members of the Birch Lane community who have ties to our local business community and/or are able to help the PTA solicit donations for our annual auction. Many local businesses will be solicited in writing within the next couple weeks, but we need a small army of volunteers to make the follow up phone calls and pick up the donations.
If you want to help, in any capacity, please do not hesitate to contact your classroom representative, any member of the PTA, or me.
Thank you for your support,
Aaron Wright PTA Vice President

Montessori Guest Speaker: Judi Bauerlein
In lieu of our February MPAC meeting, we'll be welcoming a special guest speaker, Judi Bauerlein.
Please join us tonight, Tuesday, February 21 from 7-8 p.m. in the MPR. Judi is a pioneer in Montessori education, who has trained many Montessori teachers, including some of Birch Lane's. She was also one of the consultants who helped to start Birch Lane's Montessori program eleven years ago. In 2010 Judi was honored by the American Montessori Society as a Living Legend.
We are opening Judi's presentation up to the Davis community, so please invite people who might be interested. This could be a great opportunity for incoming kindergarten parents to learn more about Montessori. Hope to see you there!

Reading Road Trip
Birch Lane readers are amazing! Our Reading Road Trip started February 1st and students have already read 4,790 picture books- 200 more than we read the entire month of February, 2011. Our highway has grown across the back of the library and will be taking a "detour" across the ceiling! Keep reading, keep bringing in postcards from around the US , and gather the family together March 1st for a night of family fun, activities, books, and celebrating the USA .
Ask your third grader if they plan to take part in Battle of the Books on March 30. Letters about Battle of the Books have gone home along with a list of titles students will be reading. The books are available for check out beginning on Tuesday afternoon after dismissal. Happy battle reading

Davis Bicycles! 2012 Bike Loopalooza
Davis Bicycles! 2012 Bike Loopalooza to be held Sunday, May 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information see www.davisbicycles.org.
In 2010, the Davis Bicycles! Schools Committee held the inaugural Bike Loopalooza on May 16. The purpose of the Loopalooza was to acquaint Davis parents and children with the Davis Bike Loop. The Bike Loop is a 12-mile loop around the perimeter of the City of Davis. Established in 2007 through the efforts of Davis Bicycles, the loop is completely paved and largely protected from motor vehicle traffic, providing a safe route to the proximity of seven of the nine elementary schools in Davis. The Schools Committee wanted to get the word out that commuting to school by bicycle along the Bike Loop is a safe and fun alternative to commuting by motor vehicle.
The inaugural Bike Loopalooza attracted 173 young cyclists and their families. These riders started the Bike Loop at one of 11 stations, mostly located near one of the seven elementary schools on the Loop, and staffed by volunteers. Each station featured activities, games or prizes. Each young participant was given a Passport when he or she began the ride and received a stamp at each station. Sixty-one of these young people completed the entire 12-mile loop, collecting all 11 stamps in their passports! Each cyclist that collected 3 stamps received a Clif Z-Bar donated by Clif Bar & Company. Several stations also distributed other prizes such as spoke cards and bike pins donated by Davis Bicycles! and the City of Davis.
2011 Bike Loopalooza
The 2011 Bike Loopalooza took place on Sunday, May 22. More than 150 children and their families came out for a day of fun and exercise. Nearly 100 elementary age students completed the entire 12-mile loop!
Davis Bicycles!
Davis Bicycles! is a citizen group dedicated to promoting bicycling in Davis and addressing issues of advocacy, safety, transportation and education. We believe that creating an inviting and safe environment for all cyclists is a great way to promote healthy living and fitness in our community.
